From the shop floorWhen to order
holiday packaging
Every year, the same story: brands remember packaging in October and discover the whole industry is booked. Here's the work-back schedule that avoids it.
Why Q4 breaks packaging timelines
Custom packaging has a supply chain like anything else, and in the fall every e-commerce brand in the country pulls on it at once. Presses book out, board suppliers allocate stock, and freight slows right when volume peaks. A quote-to-doorstep timeline that runs four weeks in April can stretch unpredictably in October — not because anyone's slacking, but because you're in line behind everyone who also waited.
The fix isn't complicated. It's a calendar.
The work-back schedule
Say you want holiday-ready boxes in hand by early November — in time for Black Friday packing. Working backwards:
| Milestone | Target | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Boxes in hand | Early November | Buffer before Black Friday packing starts |
| Production starts | Early October | Runs take two to four weeks, plus shipping |
| Proof approved | Late September | Nothing prints before you sign off — approve fast, but carefully |
| Quote accepted, artwork in | Mid September | Artwork placement and dieline setup happen here |
| Quote requested | Late August – early September | The step that costs nothing and starts everything |
Reading that bottom row in July means you have real slack — and slack is exactly what you want, because holiday orders are also where quantities get misjudged and reprints hurt most.
Three holiday-specific decisions
Quantity: order for your December, not your July. Look at last Q4's order volume (or your most optimistic forecast) and add a margin. Running out of branded boxes mid-December means shipping in plain stock during your highest-visibility month. With unit prices dropping steeply at higher quantities, the safety margin often costs less than you'd think.
Seasonal print: think twice. A snowflake-covered box is charming until January, when the leftovers become unusable stock. The durable move is year-round branding on the box and seasonal flair on the cheap, replaceable layer — a holiday postcard or sticker seal inside a standard box. Same festive effect, zero wasted boxes.
Inserts earn their keep in December. Holiday orders skew multi-item — gift sets, bundles, several products in one box. That's exactly the order type that arrives rattling or broken without a divider or die-cut insert, and December is the worst month for a breakage-and-replacement cycle: the replacement misses the holiday.
If you're reading this in October
Not all is lost — but simplify. A plain kraft box with a one-color logo quotes faster, prints faster, and skips complex proofing rounds. So does reordering an existing dieline instead of designing a new one. Tell us the real deadline in your quote request and we'll give you an honest answer about what's achievable — including "not this year, but here's what to do instead."
