hang tags
For apparel and handmade goods, the tag is the salesperson: price, story, and care instructions hanging off the product itself.
What a hang tag has to do
On a rack or a market table, nobody's reading your website — the tag is the entire pitch. A good one carries three things: what it costs, why it's different (two sentences, not a manifesto), and how to care for it. Handmade and small-batch brands get a fourth job out of it: the maker's story, which is often the actual reason the product sells.
Specs we build to
| Spec | Standard | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Sizes | 2 × 3.5 in, 2.5 × 4 in | Custom shapes from a small custom die |
| Stock | 16–24 pt card or natural kraft | Tags get handled — thin stock creases and looks it |
| Drilling | 1/8 in hole, standard placement | Position it clear of your artwork |
| Full color or 1-color on kraft | Both sides — the back is where care info lives |
String: attached or bulk
Tags come strung (each tag with its loop attached — dearer per tag, zero labor on your end) or with bulk string and self-serve threading (cheaper, fine at craft volumes, tedious past a few hundred). There's a real crossover point: if you're tagging over ~500 items per batch, pre-strung pays for itself in evenings recovered. Common string choices: natural jute or hemp for the kraft look, cotton or satin for softer goods.
Match the tag to the fastening moment: safety-pinned through fabric needs a tougher stock than a loop over a bottleneck. Tell us how the tag attaches and we'll spec the drilling and board for it.
Barcodes and boutique requirements
Selling into shops? Many retailers require a scannable barcode and a specific price placement on the tag. Barcodes print cleanly at standard sizes on smooth stock — on textured kraft, we keep them slightly larger to guarantee the scan. Bring the retailer's spec to the quote and the tag will pass on the first try.
Common questions
What's the minimum order for hang tags?
500 per design — which matches how tags get used, since every unit of product wears one.
Does the string come with the tags?
Your choice: pre-strung (each tag arrives ready to attach) or bulk string for self-threading. Pre-strung costs more per tag and nothing in labor; past a few hundred tags per batch it's usually the honest recommendation.
Can the tag be a custom shape?
Yes — shaped tags come from a small custom die, a one-time cost spread over the run. A tag shaped like your product is memorable; a rectangle with strong design is cheaper and usually just as effective.
Will a barcode scan on kraft stock?
Yes, printed with enough contrast and size — kraft's texture just means we size barcodes a touch larger. If a retailer gave you a barcode spec, send it with your quote request.
Can hang tags match my boxes and stickers?
That's the point of printing them together — same kraft, same inks, same type. The tag, the box seal, and the card read as one brand because they came off the same presses.
